20 Oct What’s the Etiquette with Siblings in Law?
We all know just how complicated wedding etiquette can be – especially with so many rules changing and adapting to a whole new generation of brides and grooms.
Some things always stay the same, though – and those are the rules that pertain not so much to “what should be done” as they do to “how to make your guests feel good”.
For instance, do you know the etiquette related to your (future) siblings in law? If you’re looking for some answers, be sure to read on and find out more about this:
- Yes, you should totally invite them to be bridesmaids and groomsmen. Most of the time, your wedding is about YOU. However, your future siblings in law are family – and even though you might not get along with them as amazingly well as you do with your BFF, you should still invite them in the wedding party.
- Yes, you might want to consider inviting their spouses in the wedding party too. If your siblings in law are married, inviting their spouses in the wedding party will definitely make them feel happy and appreciated. It’s not a real “must”, but if your wedding party isn’t very large already, you should definitely consider the option.
- Yes, your spouse should step in if issues appear on the horizon. If your future sister in law is too pushy with her wedding advice or if your future brother in law is likely to deliver a slurry wedding speech, you should ask your future spouse to talk to them. Of course, this should happen in the kindest and politest way there is.
- Yes, they should be involved in the wedding planning – but only if they show interest. If your future in-laws don’t show much interest in helping you plan the wedding, you shouldn’t insist very much on this. Invite them to the pre-wedding events, but don’t ask them to participate in the planning process if they don’t want to.
