The Oaks Waterfront Inn & Events Maryland Wedding Venues newlyweds kissing while spending time on the waterfront dock

Don’t get married without making sure you meet the requirements

Your wedding day is very special. Of course, everyone understands why you will want to make this event one of the most beautiful ones of your life. Yet, beyond wedding colors and wedding themes lies something even more important: legislation.

What are the legal requirements to get married? What are the basics without which your marriage would not be legally recognized? We have some tips for you p- so read on and find out more.

The marriage license. It is important that you don’t get this with more than 30 days before the wedding date. Once those 30 days are gone, the license will not be valid any longer.
The marriage certificate. In general, wedding officiants can help you get your marriage certificate after the wedding. Still, legislation can be very different from one state to another – and in some of them you may have to be present when requesting the certificate as well.
The witnesses. You only need two witnesses, and they will sign the license together with the officiant. They can be whoever you want them to be – from the photographer to a very close friend or the Maid of Honor and Best Man themselves.
The officiant. Again, it is of great importance that you hire an officiant who is legally recognized. Judges and county clerks can usually play this role, as well as religious officiants (e.g. ministers, priests, rabbis, and so on).
All states have different marriage laws – and while the aforementioned “basics” usually stay the same from one state to another, the safest way to ensure everything is alright is by doing a bit of research yourself. Pay close attention to all the specifics!
